Midwife: Different, But Good
Went to our first midwife visit today. Different than visiting the doctor's office for a prenatal visit. Not bad-different, just different.
First off, we spent over an hour there discussing how Kelly was feeling. We could take our time, and didn't feel like we were holding up an Important Doctor.
Secondly, we had to take into account our midwife as a person. She comes off more human than a doctor - manners are important. You could talk about your body as a machine to a doctor, and it doesn't matter. A doc is just there to fix a problem and move on. The midwife is there as a confidant, and an optimizer. She's looking for the good groove.
The good groove is what your body is supposed to be doing. Doctors are trained to look for problems, symptoms, and warning signs (so I believe - I've not been trained as a doctor, so I won't swear in a court of law this is true). Doctors have to be somewhat pessimistic. All they see are the problems people go through. How often do you manage to make it to your regularly scheduled doctor's appointment? And when you do make it there, how much time do you and the doc spend together?
Midwives are about optimizing what your body already wants to do. They watch for warning signs, sure, but they're also about getting stuff out of the way of the body, and appreciating the work that a woman's body does all by itself. Supervising, really, but not correcting (e.g. with drugs).
Oh, and I've started on a python script to do thumbnails. I know, I know -- me and a million other people. This one is different, really. Well, at least it will be. See, you give it a folder with pictures. Maybe your digital camera, whatever. Based on previous settings, it knows your FTP login to your website. It then generates thumbnails for all the pictures, and the HTML for the photo album, and then uploads it. Maybe a numbered chart is more descriptive.
1. Get digital pictures (.jpg, .png, .gif) on your computer in one folder.
2. Start my python program.
3. ????
4. Profit!
