Sophie To N|Vu
Since we've moved Sophie to a big-girl bed (a twin, see older posts for more info), we've lost the ability to put her in her crib for a reset when she's acting up. She's a great kid, but sometimes her tiny emotions overthrow her
We now have the Time Out Chair. Sophie does a great job of sitting in it when she's put there. She cries and says "All done! All done wiff Time Out Chaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiirrrrrrrr!" When she calms down, she gets to come out.
I wonder what the next step is in this evolution of discipline? Ah well - we'll git thar' when we git thar'.
I gotta take an aside, though, and mention this. Last night, while getting ready for her bath, I was holding Nels. Kelly stripped Sophie down nekkid, and was about to put her in the bath when she got a phone call from her sister.
This usually takes a long time.
Meanwhile, Sophie was content to frolick about the house. She was out of my sight for most of it, then came back into the room looking contrite. She said, in the sweetest little voice:
"Did you pee on the floor?"
I'm guessing that's what she thought we were going to say, and she was just beating us to the punch. 'Cause, you know, she peed on the floor. She must assume we know everything or somesuch. Anyway, it occurs to me that she doesn't know that this is not desirable (we're not gonna bust her chops over something like pee on linoleum), and that we want pee contained in the potty. So maybe we better work harder on that. Kelly seems to think that cloth diapers are going to make her more aware of her body functions, therefore more likely to want to learn the potty. It remains to be seen.
I promised to talk about entitlement. I've been thinking about this for the last 24 hours, since yesterday at playschool the adults in the back room started talking about it. It's a long story, but the bottom line is What makes Americans think they're entitled to stuff? Stuff like a little zone-out TV time, or cheap gas, or what have you. The rest of the world doesn't think this way. Is it because of our priveledged position in the world? I gotta believe it's related to that, anyway. I was thinking about this with regards to Microsoft. They behave the way they do, brutally, and then whine 'Where's the love?' They think they're big enough and present enough to walk on people, CAUSE THEY'RE ENTITLED TO IT. They certainly act that way.
Of course, this makes them no different from your middle-class american. Except that they've got 40 billion in the bank. Other than that, though.
I missed the KPLUG meeting, where I was to give a lecture on Gaming under Linux. I'm really sad about it, too -- it was going to be a good lecture. I had to miss it for family reasons that I won't go into.
And finally, I promised to talk about WYSIWYG editors on Linux. I'm using N|Vu to write this page, and I'm impressed at the ease of use. Right outta the box it's working great. If you've a website (don't we all by now?), try it. Lightweight HTML editing at its best.
